PH & SOIL MANAGEMENT
pH & Soil Management
The Secret to a Greener Lawn is Beneath the Surface
You can apply the best fertilizer in the world, but if your soil’s pH is out of balance, your grass simply cannot “eat.” Think of pH management as opening the door so nutrients can enter the plant. Without it, your investment in lawn care is largely wasted.
At Liberty Turf, we don’t guess—we test. We manage the complex chemistry of Georgia’s red clay to ensure your lawn has the perfect foundation for growth.
🧪 Why pH Matters in Georgia
Most Georgia soil is naturally acidic (low pH) because of our native red clay and heavy rainfall. When soil becomes too acidic:
Nutrient Lockup: Fertilizer gets “stuck” in the soil, and the grass roots can’t absorb it.
Weed Takeover: Weeds like moss and certain broadleaf varieties thrive in acidic soil where grass struggles.
Poor Root Growth: Acidic conditions can become toxic to delicate root hairs, leading to a thin, patchy lawn.
🧱 The Solution: Professional Lime Applications
To counteract acidity, we use high-quality Pelletized Lime. Lime is a soil amendment made from ground limestone that naturally raises the pH level, neutralizing the acid.
Benefits of Correcting Your pH:
Maximizes Fertilizer Efficiency: Makes sure every pound of nitrogen and potassium you pay for actually reaches the grass.
Improved Soil Structure: Helps break down heavy clay, allowing for better water and air penetration.
Enhanced Color & Thickness: Lawns with balanced pH are naturally deeper green and more resilient against heat and drought.

Frequently Asked Questions
Because of our local climate, most Georgia lawns require at least one significant lime application per year to maintain the proper balance.
You can, but without a soil test, you risk over-applying or using the wrong type of lime (Dolomitic vs. Calcific). Professional pelletized lime is also much cleaner and more effective than the “dusty” versions found in retail stores.
Lime can be applied at almost any time of year! It takes time to break down and work its way into the soil, so the sooner it’s applied, the sooner you’ll see the results in your grass.
📊 Our Soil Management Process
Soil Testing
We take core samples from various spots in your yard to get an accurate reading of your current pH, phosphorus, and potassium levels. This allows us to create a “prescription” specifically for your lawn.
Custom Liming
Based on the test results, we calculate the exact poundage of lime required to move your pH into the “Sweet Spot” (typically between 6.0 and 7.0 for most Georgia turf).
Ongoing Monitoring
Soil chemistry doesn’t change overnight, and it doesn’t stay fixed forever. We monitor your lawn’s progress throughout the season and adjust our program as the soil stabilizes.
